Noise from Windfarms
Windfarms and the noise generated by them is a hot topic in the news. In March, the Telegraph reported that "one in six wind farms" sparked complaints over noise and the Country Guardian website lists 240 action groups against Windfarms.
Experts understand that the problem is largely due to a chopping sound caused by Amplitude Modulation. Noise Bulletin reported that RenewableUK (formerly the British Wind Energy Association) is commissioning research into the causes of Amplitude Modulation. Furthermore, Renewable UK have recently accused anti wind farm protesters of costing the UK £1.3bn by delaying developments with the Chief Executive labelling their concerns as "selfish". In contrast, back in 2009 the Independent reported a American doctor's research stating "living too close to wind turbines can cause heart disease, tinnitus, vertigo, panic attacks, migraines and sleep deprivation".
Noise Bulletin also reported that members of the Institute of Acoustics have been continuing the debate around the Windfarm Regulations (ETSU-R-97) with the debate chairman admitting that it "proved to be the most controversial document ever seen in the industry". (Previous debate)
With RenewableUK reporting 280 Windfarms in operation and nearly as many in the planning stage this looks to be an issue worth watching.
